We had a fantastic day for ECO last Thursday, a highlight of which was cooking popcorn over a fire. After hearing a story about a reindeer queen who left gifts in the forest for the animals, children were invited to create sculptures or pictures in the snow (the snow was pretty dry and not ideal for sculpting!) which they could decorate with birdseed as a gift for animals. This led to speculation about which animals might visit.
On Friday we decided to use that idea to write a class book. For the middle part of our book each student illustrated a page with their animal and gave me a sentence about what was happening. We tried to keep it simple so this part of the book could be read by children (great sight word practice!) One child did note that some of our animals might not actually get along so well in real life, but for our purposes we imagined a festive, friendly party with all of the animals happily celebrating together.
