With the steady rain on Wednesday morning we decided to skip going to the river and went to the forest after all.  We had tea (using the new mugs purchased for us by the PTO), roasted marshmallows, and wrote wishes for the forest on birch bark.  We ended with a rousing game of coyote and deer (your child can probably explain this).  Thank you for your help in sending children prepared for ECO all year, through all kinds of weather.  This group really exemplified the idea that we can always have fun outside, no matter the weather!

During math the past two Fridays, students spent time jumping and measuring the distance of their jumps.  Children put both toes on a starting tape and jumped with both feet at the same time, marking where they landed.  The first Friday we measured each jump with craft sticks.  Our longest jump was 14 craft sticks and our shortest jump was 9 craft sticks.  We had four jumps that were 10 craft sticks long and four that were 11 craft sticks long.  In discussing these results we decided that if a new student were to join our class their jump would probably be 10 or 11 craft sticks.   This piqued our curiosity so we called Mr. Young and asked him to send two students down to jump for us and both jumped a distance of 11 craft sticks.

This week we jumped again, but this time we measured with cubes.  This gave us great practice counting by 10's.  We noticed the results were much different, with jumps measuring 66 to 81 cubes.  With a little bit of pondering children recognized that this is because our unit of measure was much smaller.
