For the past several weeks we have been working on informational writing. We have talked about the difference between fiction and nonfiction writing throughout the year, and to kick off our informational writing we read several nonfiction texts including Chameleon, Chameleon by Joy Crowley with fantastic photographs by Nic Bishop, and One Tiny Turtle by Nicola Davis. After reading each book we talked about some of the facts that children had learned and they had an opportunity to work on their own nonfiction writing.

This culminated with a project writing about our nature name animals. Children either listened to an adult read a book about their animal or heard a book on iPads (thanks to Eric for preloading books about many of our animals). When they were done I recorded some of the facts that they had learned. Several students had very thoughtful questions that weren't answered in the books, so we did a search to find answers. Children then turned these facts into pages for their books. We completed this project by creating collage covers for the books. They are very excited to bring these home!
